Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Use Hand Tools Over Power Tools

Power tools are the most popular option for many people, but they’re not always the best choice. There are pros and cons to both hand tools and power tools that you need to consider when deciding which one is right for your workshop or project.

If you can afford it, it is usually best to get a good selection of hand tools as well as a basic range of power tools for when you need to work on larger projects that might require more repetitive cuts, less accuracy or large boards that would be difficult to handle otherwise.

In this post, I’ll go through the benefits of hand tools over power tools. There are many reasons to choose these on a variety of projects and skill levels.

I think hand tools are one of the most underrated types of tools. The benefits they offer far outweigh what power tools can provide, and it’s a shame that more people don’t use them in their workshops. Check out my list below for some reasons to choose these over power tools!

So without further ado, here’s my list: “Top Twenty Reasons To Use Hand Tools Over Power Tools”

1. Convenient Availability:

Most hand tools are readily available from hardware stores and home improvement centres, while power tools require a bit of research to find a suitable supplier – especially for more specialist or larger equipment.

2. Cheaper than Power Tools in the Long Run

You can buy tools that meet your needs without breaking the bank, and you’re not paying for a lot of features or power that you’ll never use. Second-hand purchases can also be found at car boot sales or online without any of the risks associated with buying used electrical equipment.

3. Variety

Including everything from hammers to screwdrivers to saws, there are so many hand tools out there with different uses. For example, I never realized how useful a set of chisels could be! It makes me want to create more projects now just so I can experiment with these new additions.

4. Durability

while some power tools will last years if cared for well, they lose their quality over time because metal parts wear down more quickly and repairing or replacing components can be tricky and expensive, especially if you need to get the tool repaired for you, or if the tool is not a current model and spare parts are hard to find.

In general, most hand tools will last a lot longer if cared for, cleaned and stored well.

5. Lightweight and Portable

Unlike bulky and heavy power tools, most hand tools weigh less and are more transportable – for example, a hand plane can be carried easily, whereas a thickness planer is less easy to transport or more around.

6. No power needed

If you have to work in a remote place where there are no power sockets, this is a big plus.

7. No Noise

something that can be quite annoying and even harmful to your hearing when you’re using power tools close up for long periods of time.

8. More Accuracy

Hand tools, by their nature, allow for better accuracy when you’re working on smaller, more delicate projects. You have greater control with hand tools. Plus many tasks just aren’t possible or practical with power tools – for example, working on delicate jobs like in-lay work is virtually impossible to get good results using anything other than hand tools.

9. Flexibility

Hand tools allow for a greater level of flexibility in your work and projects.

For example, you can use a chisel for creating dovetail joints, in-lay work or for mortise and tenon joints – the list is almost endless.

10. Safety

Arguably possibly the most important reason why hand tools are better than power tools is with regards to your health & safety.

Hand tools are safer because they don’t have the same risks as power tools.

For example, hand saws won’t amputate your hand if you accidentally move it into the wrong position and a hand drill doesn’t pose much of a risk for electrocution like some power drills do.

Hand tools generally don’t generate nearly as much dust or chippings that power tools create. You don’t generally need to wear as much PPE when using hand tools.

Conclusion

So to sum up, hand tools can have advantages over power tools. They’re more affordable, convenient and better for our health & safety. They also allow you to work on one project at a time and only use the equipment you need for that project.

The option of whether to use hand tools or power tools is a difficult one. There are many advantages that come with choosing the former and, as we’ve shown here, they’re not always cheaper than their electric counterparts in the long run. For these reasons alone, it’s worth considering them before purchasing expensive machinery for your home improvement projects.
